Fiona Elisala, Kubin Village, Mua Island, Torres Strait Artist

I am originally from Dauan Island, one of the western group of islands located about 120km north of Thursday Island. I am one of a family of seven.

After attending primary school on Dauan, I then moved to Yeppoon in Central Queensland for secondary school and began mixing traditional and western art forms such as lino cut, silkscreens, and etching.

My skills in visual arts were quickly recognised by my teacher and I received the Minister's Art Awards for Excellence in 1998 and 2002.

I went on to study at the Queensland College of Arts, Griffith University, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Art in Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art.

While at Griffith University I won the Lind Buxton Memorial Prize Award for high achievement and collaborated with other students on a public art project for the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Museum.

l also went on to design a set and back drop for a KITE Theatre Children's Production for Out of the Box Festival in Brisbane and the Torres Strait.

I now live in Kubin on Moa Island, some 40km of Thursday Island. One of the best things about living in Kubin is that I have access to Ngalmun Lagau Minaral Art Centre, and have participated in several workshops where I have experimented with water colours as well as masking and layering techniques, screen printing, etching, mixed media, lino-cut printing, and have also had my drawing skills upgraded.
